Octagrip Pinblock
Steinway & Sons patented their Hexagrip pinblock in 1963, offering the world’s first piano designed for better tuning stability. They followed this up in 2009 with the Octagrip pinblock, a variation of the Hexagrip pinblock, a more cost effective version of the Steinway pinblock still designed for increased tuning stability, eliminates tuning pin skipping, and helps the piano stay in tune longer.
Tapered, Wide-tail Soundboard
Based on Steinway & Sons 1936 patent for the Diaphragmatic soundboard, the Boston piano’s tapered board is thicker in the middle and thinner at the edges, allowing the board to move more freely and resonate more. By making the piano wider in the back – or tail – they can fit a longer piano’s soundboard in a much more compact case, saving space and money. This is why Boston pianos sound just as full and rich as other company’s larger pianos.
