Steinway & Sons revolutionized piano construction in 1963 with the introduction of their patented Hexagrip® pinblock—the first of its kind designed specifically to enhance tuning stability. This innovation was adapted for the Boston Performance Edition series in 2009 as the Octagrip™ pinblock, a more cost-effective interpretation of the original Steinway design.

Engineered with precision, the Octagrip pinblock offers superior torque retention, minimizes the risk of tuning pin slippage, and helps the piano stay in tune longer—delivering professional-level performance and reliability at a more accessible price point.

Tapered, Wide-tail Soundboard

Inspired by Steinway & Sons’ groundbreaking 1936 patent for the Diaphragmatic® soundboard, Boston pianos feature a tapered soundboard that’s thicker in the center and thinner at the edges—an ingenious design that allows for greater flexibility and enhanced resonance. By widening the tail of the piano, Boston is able to fit a larger soundboard—comparable to that of a longer grand—into a more compact and affordable case. The result is a full, rich tone that rivals much larger pianos from other brands, delivering exceptional sound without requiring extra space or cost.
